My vision for my role as a mathematics teacher of elementary students is that I will provide my students with opportunities to grow as mathematicians in my classroom. I will give my students all the chance to discover new strategies and methods for problem solving, while also giving them the chance to explain their discoveries to help others understand more clearly. I will provide with a risk-taking environment that shows students that mistakes are okay, because that means one is learning and trying new things. I will provide my students with opportunities to discuss questions and if or why they make sense based on factual mathematical evidence. I will let my students come up and teach topics to the class, because if students can teach a math topic that means that they have truly mastered it. Most importantly, though, I want my students to see themselves as mathematicians, despite whether or not they think that they are “good” at math.
1. Aims of education
What is the goal of education?
If you were forced to choose, what would you say are the 3 most important things which you want students to learn in your classroom?
2. Views of knowledge and learning How do you think students learn? How do you know if they are learning?
3. Image of the learner and teacher What are your expectations and hopes for students?
4. Beliefs about curriculum and pedagogy Five years after students have left your classroom, what do you want them to say about your teaching? about the curriculum?
5. Influence of the specific context How do you think you the context of where you teach influences how you teach?
6. Criteria for good (effective) teaching What sorts of things do you look for to tell you that you’ve taught a really good lesson? a poor lesson?
